Pro Football News & Injury Report
Week Four
Friday September 26, 2003
On Bye This Week: Miami, N.Y. Giants, Seattle, Tampa Bay
Sunday
PHILADELPHIA EAGLES (0-2) AT BUFFALO BILLS (3-0) 1:00 PM
EST
EAGLES
The Eagles are an NFL-best 18-6 on the road since the start of
the 2000 season, and head coach Andy Reid is 4-0 in games
following the bye week. But the extra week of rest did little
to help the Eagles overcome their injury problems.
Starting FS Brian Dawkins (sprained foot), backup DE Jerome
McDougle (sprained ankle), starting CB Bobby Taylor (strained
foot) and starting DE Brandon
Whiting
(strained hamstring) are all expected to miss Sunday's game at
Buffalo.
Dawkins, officially listed as out, remains sidelined with a
mild Lis Franc sprain that he suffered in the season opener.
He is undergoing rehab but continues to hobble around on
crutches.
As a result of the injuries, first-year FS Clinton Hart and
second-year CB Lito Sheppard will start in place of Dawkins
and Taylor, just as they did in a 31-10 loss to New England.
Look for second-year CB Sheldon Brown to come in on nickel and
dime packages.
Up front, starting DT Darwin Walker will again move from
tackle to left defensive end in place of Whiting. DE N.D. Kalu
starts at right defensive end with veteran DE Marco Coleman
providing relief. DTs Hollis Thomas, Corey Simon and rookie
Sam Rayburn will rotate at tackle. Thomas, who leads all
defensive linemen with 13 tackles, will start alongside Simon.
Newcomer DL Frank Ferrara could see action at both end and
tackle.
Starting WLB Carlos Emmons (foot) and starting WR Todd
Pinkston (shoulder) practiced Friday and are expected to start
Sunday.
Many believe QB Donovan McNabb holds the key to turning things
around for the Eagles and he'll have to be sharper than he has
in the first two games. He'll also be looking to complete his
first TD pass of the season. McNabb has thrown three
interceptions and been sacked 10 times son far.
As for the Eagles' ground game; look for the running back by
committee approach to continue with Correll Buckhalter, Duce
Staley and Brian Westbrook sharing the load. It's not clear
who will start each player is involved in different personnel
groupings.
Offensive coordinator Brad Childress said this week that his
unit must hold onto the football and establish a rhythm. And
given what Miami's Ricky Williams did to Buffalo, look for the
Eagles to establish the ground game that has been virtually
non-existent so far this season.
BILLS
Starting RB Travis Henry (questionable-ribs) was scheduled to
practice Friday, but did not. Head coach Gregg Williams said,
"He asked me for another day (of rest) so that's what we did.
He'll be a game-time decision."
If Henry dresses his role is expected to be limited on Sunday.
He won't wear a flak jacket if he plays but the affected area
will be padded. Backup RB Joe Burns is expected to start.
Backup RB Sammy Morris would normally play ahead of Burns, but
he's out six-to-eight weeks after undergoing hernia surgery
Monday.
The Bills have until 4 PM EST on Saturday to make a roster
move if they choose to add to their depleted running back
corps. The most likely call-up from the practice squad would
be RB Ken Simonton, who's been with the team the entire
offseason.
Backup FB Phil Crosby (leg) was listed earlier in the week as
doubtful with a cracked fibula was downgraded Friday to out.
CINCINNATI BENGALS (0-3) AT CLEVELAND BROWNS (1-2) 1:00 PM
EST
BENGALS
There were
no changes in the Bengals injury report from Thursday but
starting RB Corey Dillon (probable-groin) ran off the practice
field Friday as if to show anyone watching that he is indeed
alight and ready to play Sunday. He's had some of his best
games against the Browns, averaging 117.6 yards in eight
career games against Cleveland.
It will be a game-day decision whether or not #3 RB Rudi
Johnson (probable-thigh) will be activated.
TE Matt Schobel (doubtful-hamstring) returned to practice for
the first time this week on Friday and now has a chance to
play. His final status will be a game-day decision.
Backup WR T.J. Houshmandzadeh (out-hamstring) and reserve MLB
Riall Johnson (out-calf) didn't practice.
Backup S Marquand Manuel (hamstring) and starting OLB Brian
Simmons (shoulder) practiced and are expected to play.
BROWNS
Starting QB Kelly Holcomb (ankle-questionable) has a hairline
fracture of his right leg and a badly sprained left ankle but
was able to do a little more in practice Friday. However, he
still won't start and may not even be available as a backup to
Tim Couch. With that in mind, the Browns are expected to sign
Nate Hybl off the practice squad to be the backup. Couch has
taken almost all the reps in practice as the Browns try to get
him ready. The reps he did not take went to Hybl, an undrafted
rookie who had some decent numbers at Oklahoma.
#3 WR Dennis Northcutt (questionable-chest) has a hairline
fracture of a rib but was able to practice fully for a second
straight day. Unless something unforeseen happens, Northcutt
will play. However, because of the nature of the position and
having his body exposed to hits, the Browns may limit him
somewhat as a punt returner. #4 WR Andre Davis, who fumbled a
return last Sunday, would take his place in that area if
needed.
Backup CB Michael Lehan (questionable-hamstring) has a pulled
hamstring and practiced for the third straight day. Despite
that, he still may be de-activated for Sunday. If Lehan
doesn't play against the Bengals, he will likely play next
Sunday at Pittsburgh. Backup CB Lewis Sanders could replace
Lehan in the dime, but it's more likely that the Browns will
leave their linebackers on the field in passing situations.
Starting LBs Ben Taylor, Andra Davis and Kevin Bentley have
done well in coverage thus far.
JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS (0-3) AT HOUSTON TEXANS (1-2) 1:00 PM
EST
JAGUARS
Starting QB Mark Brunell (elbow) was downgraded to doubtful
after missing his third straight practice. Although no
official announcement has been made, rookie QB Byron Leftwich
is expected to make his first pro start. Brunell required five
stitches to close a cut on his throwing elbow.
Starting OLB Keith Mitchell (neck-questionable) split first
team reps with backup LB Danny Clark Friday and the two are
likely to share time on Sunday.
Backup WR Micah Ross (ankle) was downgraded to doubtful and
won't play. Rookie WR Cortez Hankton is expected to serve as
the #3 WR again.
Backup RB Chris Fuamatu-Ma'afala (hamstring) was upgraded to
probable Friday after practicing again. He'll be available as
their third RB.
Backup LB Eric Westmoreland (knee-probable) practiced Friday
and should be available.
Backup CB James Trapp (ankle) practiced and is expected to
serve as the nickel back, especially since CB Kiwaukee Thomas
(groin-doubtful) sat out of practice again and won't play.
Backup LB Shannon Taylor, a special teams player, strained his
calf in Wednesday's practice and hasn't practiced since. He's
not expected to play.
TEXANS
G Milford Brown (knee-questionable) won't be able to play
Sunday so backup OL Todd Washington will start for Brown
again.
Starting MLB Charlie Clemons (chest-probable) practiced Friday
after missing the previous two days of work and is now
expected to play. Head coach Dom Capers only requires that a
player work on Friday.
Backup RB Domanick Davis (hip), starting ILB Jay Foreman
(shoulder), backup TE Rashod Kent (ankle), rookie OLB Antwan
Peek (knee), starting DE Gary Walker (shoulder) all practiced
and are expected to play in their normal roles.
Starting DE Jerry DeLoach will move from DE to NT for Seth
Payne (knee-IR) and backup DE Corey Sears will move into
DeLoach's RDE slot.
SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS (1-2) AT MINNESOTA VIKINGS (3-0) 1:00
PM EST
49ERS
On offense, the Niners' offensive line remains dinged-up, with
all five regular starters appearing on the injury report.
Starting QB Jeff Garcia and starting WR Tai Streets also
appear as well.
Garcia is
battling a strained left groin, which he sustained in the
first half of Sunday's 13-12 loss to the Cleveland Browns. He
says the injury is especially aggravating when he tries to
throw on the run. Since training camp, the quarterback has
battled a back injury and a concussion. Garcia practiced again
on Friday and is expected to start Sunday.
Streets was held out of practice Thursday with patella
tendonitis, but was back on the field Friday. He is listed as
probable.
Up front, starting LG Eric Heitmann (ankle) is officially
listed as doubtful but is expected to miss the next two weeks.
Backup OL Kyle Kosier will start in Heitmann's place this
week.
Starting LT Derrick Deese (right ankle-questionable) sat out
practice again on Friday. Deese said his ankle has responded
better during individual work, but it appears he will not
play. Rookie OT Kwame Harris replaced Deese in practice and is
expected to start for him.
Starting
C Jeremy Newberry (left ankle/quadriceps) returned to practice
Friday after sitting out Wednesday and Thursday. Starting RG
Ron Stone (ankle) and starting RT Scott Gragg (ankle)
practiced again on Friday and are expected to play Sunday in
Minnesota.
"It's going to be the exact same group that we started last
week. Scott (Gragg), Ron Stone, Newberry, Kosier and Kwame
(Harris)," head coach Dennis Erickson said in response to a
question inquiring as to who would comprise his starting
offensive line.
Starting TE Eric Johnson (collarbone) remains out and will be
sidelined another five to six weeks. He is replaced by backup
TE Jed Weaver.
On defense, starting CB Jason Webster (knee) remains out for
at least for a couple more weeks. Second-year CB Mike Rumph
replaces Webster on the right side. Nickel CB Rashad Holman
(groin) was removed from the injury report Friday and is
expected to see action Sunday. Meanwhile, starting SS Tony
Parrish (knee) and return man/backup CB Jimmy Williams
(concussion) are probable for the game. Like Streets, Parrish
has been suffering from the Patella Tendonitis. Both Parrish
and Williams practiced on Friday.
Rounding out the report are starting LDE John Engelberger and
FB Terry Jackson. Engelberger is listed as probable with an
Achilles strain that has bothered him off-and-on this season.
Jackson, a special teams standout, is also is probable with a
foot injury. Both players practiced Friday and are expected to
be in the lineup Sunday.
VIKINGS
It's looking more like the Vikings will have QB Daunte
Culpepper (back-questionable) in the lineup Sunday vs. San
Francisco. The team had pointed to Friday as the "day of
reckoning" regarding Culpepper's multiple back fractures.
Culpepper took first-team reps in practice and appears to be
feeling better progressively each day.
The team
still is publicly saying they'll wait until game-time to see
how Culpepper feels. However, the only realistic way Culpepper
won't start is if the back tightens up on him in the next 48
hours.
Head coach Mike Tice was asked if there was anything that
could hinder Culpepper's chances of playing.
"Nothing, unless he wakes up tomorrow morning swollen and not
feeling good from the work he did today," began Tice. "He did
a lot of work. You know he split the time pretty much down the
middle and I tell these beat writers all the time about
injuries sometimes you wake up in the morning and (it's)
swollen up and there is nothing you can do about it. I don't
see that the injury can get any worse, it's fractured bones.
It's a matter of how much pain and discomfort he can play
with. He moved around pretty good out there I thought and
threw the ball real well. If it was up to him, he would have
me announce him as the starter today. But I'm just going to
have to sit on it for a little bit."
Protecting Culpepper against the NFL's sack leaders (49ers)
Sunday will be more important than ever. Tice also joked
earlier in the week about the quarterback draw not being a
part of the team's game plan if Culpepper does play.
As for Culpepper's favorite target, Randy Moss
(back-questionable) was upgraded to probable on Friday after
he made his first appearance of the week on the practice
field. Moss has had a sore back for two weeks but there wasn't
much chance of him missing Sunday's game - he just needed the
back to loosen up earlier in the week.
"I wanted
him to practice today to see how he's doing and I tell you he
feels pretty good. He got a little stiff during practice.
Yeah, without a doubt he got a little stiff during practice.
But he moved around a lot better than he did last Thursday. He
seems to be feeling pretty good mentally. He's pretty upbeat.
We'll continue to have to do some of that even after this game
I'm sure he's going to have to miss some practice time and
then see how we get through the bye and hopefully by then it
will be healed up. You know back spasms don't go away in a day
now," the head coach said.
On the down side, the team's other starting WR, D'Wayne Bates
(foot-questionable), will sit for a second straight game. He
did not practice this week and a team source indicated he
wouldn't play so second-year WR Kelly Campbell gets the start.
Campbell made the most of his start last week by catching a
72-yard TD pass. Rookie Nate Burleson will once again serve as
the third receiver.
Also missing Sunday's game will be backup DT Billy Lyon
(calf-questionable). Lyon left Sunday's game and didn't
practice this week, either. Backup DL Chuck Wiley will be
active and take most of Lyon's snaps.
Starting MLB Greg Biekert (bruised ribs) was added to the
Injury Report Thursday as probable after rookie MLB E.J.
Henderson fielded all of his reps during Thursday's practice.
Biekert is still expected to start.
"Biekert we just gave a rest. He's fine, he's doing great.
He's going to start. He'll play and don't anticipate any
problems. He's older and he knows what he's doing. No sense in
putting him out there with sore ribs. Weird thing he just
reached and kind of pulled his oblique and rib cartilage thing
and he's really much better today than he was yesterday. He
wanted to go today, it's better off just resting him. That
will help him in the long run actually. And E.J. (Henderson)
needed the work. E.J. has been playing at least a series of
nickel every week and E.J. got a lot of work in there today
and that's good for him. That will help him with his nickel
this week," Tice said.
Veteran RB Doug Chapman (ankle-probable) practiced all week
and will added to the team's tailback mix along with starter
Moe Williams and rookie Onterrio Smith. According to a team
source, Chapman is expected to see more playing time than
Smith this week.
Backup S Jack Brewer (chest) also will return after sitting
out two games. He is one of coach Rusty Tillman's top special
teams performers.
Backup LB Nick Rogers (hip-probable) practiced each day this
week and will be available Sunday.
TENNESSEE TITANS (2-1) AT PITTSBURGH STEELERS (2-1) 1:00 PM
EST
TITANS
After
sounding resigned to not having second-year starting DT Albert
Haynesworth (questionable-elbow) for the second straight week,
head coach Jeff Fisher was slightly more upbeat about
Haynesworth's chances of playing. Fisher said the team would
monitor Haynesworth during pre-game warmups and see whether he
could "engage" in contact comfortably with his sore elbow.
Haynesworth has been fitted with a brace for his arm and has
tried to get used to the device this week. Starting DE Kevin
Carter moved over to DT take a lot of snaps inside last week
with Haynesworth out and the team is expected to do the same
this week if Haynesworth can't go
The Titans experienced a similar recovery scenario last week
when starting RG Benji Olson (knee) didn't practice during the
week, but found it in him Sunday to start and play the entire
contest. Olson sat out this Wednesday's workout and is still
not 100% but expects to start after practicing Thursday and
Friday with a brace on the knee.
Tennessee is expected to be without starting TE Frank Wycheck
(concussion) again. Wycheck didn't practice this week and
backup TEs Erron Kinney and Shad Meier are slated to fill in.
Rookie RB Chris Brown (hamstring) will likely make his pro
debut this week. Brown is ready after severely straining his
hamstring early in training camp. The third-rounder was active
last week but didn't make it into the game. Fisher is hoping
Brown can see some time Sunday, most likely on special teams
before he's eased into the offense over the course of the next
several weeks.
The two other Titans listed on the Injury Report (both
questionable) - starting WR Drew Bennett (shoulder) and backup
LB Rocky Boiman (shoulder/hand) - practiced each day this week
and should be ready to fulfill their roles on Sunday. Bennett
is coming off his best game as a pro, in which he caught eight
passes for 105 yards and a TD.
STEELERS
Backup RB Verron Haynes (knee) is still listed as questionable
but was able to practice Friday. His status for Sunday is
considered a game-time decision.
Starting TE Jay Riemersma (chest) is listed as probable but
also has an Achilles problem and it appears to still be
bothering him, as he did not practice Friday. If Riemersma
were unable to go then the first choice at TE would be backup
Jerame Tuman (chest). However, Tuman didn't practice Friday
and is probable.
Starting C Jeff Hartings (ankle), backup S Chris Hope (groin),
and backup CB Chidi Iwuoma (concussion) are also all listed as
probable.
Starting OT Marvel Smith (shoulder) was downgraded to
questionable as his left shoulder continues to give him
problems. Although head coach Bill Cowher did not rule Smith
out, it is highly unlikely that he will play. Backup OL Oliver
Ross would take Smith's place in the starting lineup.
ARIZONA CARDINALS (1-2) AT ST. LOUIS RAMS (1-2) 1:00 PM EST
CARDINALS
Backup WR Jason McAddley (hamstring- out) is going to be out
at least three-to-four weeks.
WR/KR
Kevin Kasper (lower back strain- doubtful) went through a
light workout on Thursday and Friday is still recovering.
Kasper will not play this weekend. Backup RB Josh Scobey will
continue to return kicks until Kasper is healthy enough to
return.
Veteran WR Larry Foster (high ankle sprain-probable) was able
to practice all week and will make the trip. However, Foster
is still is having trouble making cuts and will likely make
his return to game action next week vs. the Cowboys.
WR Bryan Gilmore (knee-probable) has shown quickness this week
in practice and will serve as the team's third receiver. WR
Nate Poole will dress as the fourth receiver.
Rookie WRs Anquan Boldin and Bryant Johnson will continue to
start until further notice. Both have made major strides in
the last few weeks as Boldin and Johnson have combined for 37
receptions and 539 yards with two Boldin touchdowns.
Starting RG Leonard Davis (arch/ankle-questionable) is having
a hard time of pushing off and hasn't practiced all week. He's
not expected to play this weekend as a result. Backup RG Chris
Dishman started last week for the injured Davis and played
pretty well and will start again for him on Sunday.
Starting QB Jeff Blake (heel-probable) hasn't missed a beat in
practice and is setting a strong example by working every day
in spite of being injured. Blake has been a breath of fresh
air since his arrival in the Valley of the Sun.
Backup C/G Jason Starkey (shoulder-questionable) practiced and
will be uniform on Sunday.
Second-year DT Wendell Bryant (ankle- questionable) is still
having trouble moving from sideline to sideline. Backup DT
Marcus Bell will start for Bryant.
Starting DE Fred Wakefield sat out last week contest because
he suffered concussions the first two games of the season.
Second-year DE Dennis Johnson started for Wakefield last week
and will fill in again. Johnson has made strides and is coming
off his best game as a Cardinal.
Rookie DL Kenny King (toe- out) is nursing a dislocated toe
and is expected to be sidelined three more weeks.
RAMS
Starting RB Marshall Faulk (hand/knee), backup LB Courtland
Bullard (hamstring), rookie WR Kevin Curtis (leg), backup G
David Loverne (elbow), S Jason Sehorn (foot), and backup LB
Scott Shanle (hamstring) are all out for Sunday. Backup RB
Lamar Gordon will start for Faulk. Rookie RB Arlen Harris will
back up Gordon.
Shanle was also suspended by the league today for violating
the anabolic steroids policy and will be out for four games.
He is eligible to return on Oct. 27, the day after the Rams
play Pittsburgh.
DT Ryan "Big Grease" Pickett is not listed on the injury
report but he said the tendonitis in his left ankle "felt
pretty good" on Friday. However, "Big Grease" was held out of
practice anyway. It won't be known until Sunday whether he'll
play against Arizona. The injury is a result of Pickett
overcompensating for his high ankle sprain.
Starting CB Travis Fisher returned to practice Friday after
missing Thursday with the flu. Fisher said he still felt
pretty sick, but practiced anyway. Fisher added that the
shoulder injury that limited him against Seattle is ``OK,''
but he said he is unable numb it again for Sunday's game. He
said he would play irrespective of that fact.
Despite suffering an ankle injury in last Sunday's game,
special teams captain/backup LB Jamie Duncan practiced all
week and said he's ready to go. Rookies CB Kevin Garrett
(wrist) and WR Shaun McDonald (thumb) were able to practice
this week and are expected to be available Sunday.
NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS (2-1) AT WASHINGTON REDSKINS (2-1)
1:00 PM EST
PATRIOTS
Starting ILB Tedy Bruschi will be the only LB who started for
the Pats in week one to start in Week Four. With starters OLB
Rosevelt Colvin (hip-IR) and ILB Ted Johnson (foot) already
sidelined, starting OLB Mike Vrabel (arm-doubtful) suffered a
broken arm last week and he completed the week without
practicing and is not expected to play.
If the Pats go with their 3-4 defense, backup LB Matt Chatham
would start with rookie DL Dan Klecko also see time at OLB.
However since starting NT Ted Washington (leg) is also out
they might switch to a 4-3 defense with rookie Ty Warren, Rick
Lyle, and Jarvis Green seeing more time on the defensive line.
Lyle can play inside or outside.
Backup S Je'Rod Cherry (questionable-leg) and starting QB Tom
Brady (probable-arm) both practiced fully again on Friday.
Cherry will play on special teams while Brady will start
despite a sore right elbow.
Starting ORT Adrian Klemm (ankle-questionable) returned to
practice Friday and is expected to start. If he has a setback
then backup OL Tom Ashworth, who replaced him in the lineup
last week, would do so again on Sunday.
Starting CB Ty Law suffered (ankle-questionable) a sprained
ankle last week and toughed his way through the final portion
of their win over the Jets. After missing two days of practice
he returned to the field today and is expected to start.
Starting FB Fred McCrary (knee-questionable) did not practice
this week so Larry Centers who started for him last week, will
do so again on Sunday.
Starting WR David Patten (knee-questionable) has a sprained
knee and he missed his third straight practice today and is
not expected to play. Second-year WR Deion Branch is expected
to start in his place with rookie WR Bethel Johnson moving in
as their third receiver.
Starting C/G Damien Woody (knee-questionable) practiced for
the first time this week today and is now expected to start.
He started at guard last week since Mike Compton was out
(foot-IR) and is expected to start at guard once again.
Backup TE Fred Baxter (leg) was added as questionable but he
practiced today and will be available.
REDSKINS
Starting LG Dave Fiore (knee-questionable) practiced for the
first time this week on Friday and head coach Steve Spurrier
said he's expected to start. Rookie Derrick Dockery saw a lot
of time at Fiore's spot in practice this week.
Starting TE Zeron Flemister (questionable-ankle), who suffered
a high ankle sprain in Week One, practiced again Friday and
will dress. However, backup TE Robert Royal will make his
third straight start.
Staring CB Champ Bailey (wrist/shoulder-probable) will wear a
cast to protect the fractured wrist he suffered against the
Giants. Bailey practiced and is expected to start.
Starting DT Jermaine Haley (hand-probable) started last week
with a cast covering his fractured thumb. Haley practiced
again and is expected to start.
Rookie WR Taylor Jacobs (abdomen-probable) practiced fully and
could be active for the first time. He suffered a bruised
pancreas in August. Jacobs still needs to work his way up the
depth chart because he's currently their 5th receiver.
Backup LB Antonio Pierce (ankle-probable) practiced and will
be available.
Starters DE Bruce Smith and starting MLB Jeremiah Trotter sat
out of Thursday's workout but they returned to practice Friday
and are expected to start.
KANSAS CITY CHIEFS (3-0) AT BALTIMORE RAVENS (2-1) 4:05 PM
EST (NOTE TIME CHANGE)
CHIEFS
After
being held out of practice Thursday because of soreness in his
hip flexor muscle, starting RB Priest Holmes re-joined his
teammates on the practice field Friday. Head coach Dick
Vermeil said Holmes' hip felt "fine" and the team expects him
to start Sunday. Holmes was added to the injury report as
questionable.
"We only had him do limited reps," said Vermeil. "I expect him
to be ready to play. I think he expects to be ready. Friday is
a lighter day for us. Situation football; we are not in pads,
we are in shells. The first part of practice he did fine. I
went by him at one time in the middle of practice and asked
him how he was doing and he said "ok." Then we just backed
off. No sense in irritating him. Right now we are planning on
him being ready to go."
The soreness is in the same hip that Holmes had operated on
during the offseason, but not in the same area - this bout of
soreness is in the hip flexor. Questions have abounded
regarding whether Holmes is truly 100% healthy, and what he
has done on the field this year would have onlookers believe
nothing is wrong.
Starting S Greg Wesley (questionable-back) was held out of
Friday's practice, but it's no reason to believe he won't be
in action Sunday. He also sat out Wednesday, but did get a
full day of work Thursday.
"He'll play -- he's ready," said Vermeil Friday. "We held him
out on purpose today. He practiced yesterday and did well but
with a back-type thing like that we didn't want to press him
today."
Backup S Lyle West saw Wesley's snaps Friday.
Starting CB William Bartee (questionable-ankle) returned to
practice this week but it's still unknown whether he'll be
active Sunday at Baltimore. If he does play Sunday, it will be
as the backup to veteran CB Dexter McCleon, who has played
well in Bartee's absence.
Backup QB Todd Collins is also questionable but progressed
well this week. Collins worked with the team the last two days
after sitting out practice Wednesday.
Backup LB Kwaika Mitchell (hamstring-doubtful) is still likely
a week away. He didn't practice this week and backup LB
Quinton Caver has assumed his special teams reps.
Starting OT Willie Roaf was given the day off Wednesday with
the flu but he returned to the field Thursday and Friday.
All five Chiefs listed as probable - rookie CB Julian Battle
(toe) starting DT John Browning (toe), starting TE Tony
Gonzalez (foot), backup LB Fred Jones (foot), and starting S
Jerome Woods (knee) - practiced each day this week and are
expected to be available in their normal roles on Sunday.
RAVENS
Starting WR Frank Sanders (leg-questionable) was added to
injury report Thursday but did practice Friday. His official
status is a game-time decision. If he can't play, backup WR
Marcus Robinson will start.
Rookie RB Musa Smith (knee-doubtful) practiced Friday but is
still not expected to be available this Sunday against Kansas
City.
Backup FB Harold Marrow (arm) is out.
Starting G Edwin Mulitalo (knee-questionable) practiced again
Friday, as did rookie S Gerome Sapp
(knee-questionable), starting S Edward Reed (knee-probable),
and backup RB Chester Taylor (hand-probable). All are expected
to be available in their normal roles.
SAN DIEGO CHARGERS (0-3) AT OAKLAND RAIDERS (1-2) 4:05 PM
EST
CHARGERS
Starting WR Reche Caldwell (wrist), backup TE Josh Norman
(hamstring), and OT Vaughn Parker (knee-injured reserve) are
out.
Starting G Solomon Page (ankle-questionable) and backup WR Tim
Dwight (knee-questionable) were both downgraded to doubtful
after failing to practice Friday. Neither will play Sunday as
per head coach Marty Schottenheimer's rule that in order to
play on gameday, a player must practice on Friday.
Starting TE Stephen Alexander (groin-questionable) also was
unable to practice Friday so backup TE Justin Peelle will
start for him yet again.
Backup S Vernon Fox (abdomen) and starting DE Marcellus Wiley
(hamstring) are also listed as questionable but were able to
practice Friday and are expected to play.
Backup OT Phil Bogle (knee) was added to the injury report
Thursday with a knee injury. But Hogle went through a limited
practice session Friday. He remains questionable on the injury
report and if he can't fill in for Parker, then rookie OL
Courtney Van Buren would be the starter. Veteran OL Bob Hallen
is going to start for Page.
With starting WR David Boston suspended for this week's game,
backup WR Eric Parker will fill in for him. Rookie WR Kassim
Osgood is expected to start for Caldwell with backup WRs Grant
Mattos and Dondre Gilliam acting as the top backups.
RAIDERS
WR Jerry
Porter (abdomen) remains out so the Raiders will continue to
go with a third-receiver by committee with backup WRs Ronald
Curry, Alvis Whitted, and rookie Doug Gabriel taking turns.
Backup DE Trace Armstrong (ribs-questionable) practiced and is
expected to play.
Starting RG Mo Collins (knee-questionable) has missed practice
time each of the last two weeks but practiced again Friday and
is expected to start. Backup OL Brad Badger backs him up.
Backup SS
Anthony Dorsett (ankle-questionable) returned to practice this
week and is expected to play. Dorsett has missed the last two
games.
KR Ronney Jenkins (ankle-questionable) wasn't able to practice
again Friday so rookie RB Justin Fargas will take his place as
the Raiders' kick returner if needed.
Starting ORT Lincoln Kennedy (calf-questionable) was unable to
practice again so he missed all of their workouts this week
making Kennedy on the more doubtful side to play. Second-year
OT Langston Walker would fill in if needed. That actually
could prove to be an upgrade because Kennedy has been hobbled
for weeks.
Starting SLB Bill Romanowski (concussion-questionable) missed
his third straight practice Friday. He's suffered two
concussions in three weeks but they're not counting him out
yet as Romanowski has never missed a regular season game. But
even if he does play, Romanowski's reaction time will be way
off because of the concussions. Backup LB Travian Smith has
been running with the starters in place of Romanowski, who is
on the more doubtful side to play.
Backup DE Sam Williams (knee) was added to the injury report
after missing Friday's workout. With Stubblefield coming back,
he could be inactive anyway.
Starting DT Dana Stubblefield (ankle-questionable) practiced
again and is expected to start. He sat out Monday night's
game.
Backup C Adam Treu (hamstring-questionable), also the team's
long snapper, practiced and will handle long snapping duties
on Sunday. Starting TE Doug Jolley is the backup LS.
Starting FS Rod Woodson (knee-questionable) practiced fully
Friday and will start. The plan is to have Woodson practice
once per week in order to have him ready for gameday. They
followed a similar pattern last year where Woodson would
practice once or twice a week.
Backup TE Teyo Johnson (ankle) was added to the injury report
Thursday but he practiced Friday and will play.
ATLANTA FALCONS (1-2) AT CAROLINA PANTHERS (2-0)
4:15 PM EST
FALCONS
The Falcons
will try for the third straight week to get head coach Dan
Reeves his 200th coaching victory. And they will once again
attempt to do so without the services of QB Michael Vick
(ankle) and starting receiver Brian Finneran (doubtful-broken
left hand). Finneran has worked some this week with a cast on
but said the best-case scenario would be for him to return
next week vs. Minnesota. However, the October 13 game vs. St.
Louis seems to be the most realistic return date.
Starting weak-side LB Sam Rogers has torn cartilage in his
left knee that will eventually need surgery. He was downgraded
from questionable to doubtful Thursday after being unable to
practice for a second straight day. He also didn't practice
Friday and will likely be replaced by second-year man Will
Overstreet.
"Sam Rogers is probably the only guy we'll move to doubtful,"
said Reeves regarding his walking wounded. "I think the other
guys that are probable are okay. Finneran is practicing, but
he won't play. Mike Vick is out and Sam Rogers is doubtful.
Other than that, I think everybody will be ready."
Starting LG Travis Claridge aggravated a shoulder strain in
practice Wednesday and is among seven Falcons listed as
probable. Roberto Garza has also been seeing some time at LG,
as he has come along well after injuring his biceps in
preseason.
Backup CB Tod McBride (broken right thumb) seems closer to
playing than he has since originally sustaining the injury.
McBride continues to practice and will likely see his first
game-action Sunday.
The other probable Falcons - backup WR/KR LaTarance Dunbar
(groin), backup NT Ellis Johnson (shoulder), backup TE Brian
Kozlowski (calf), backup SS Gerald McBurrows (neck), and
backup S Kevin McCadam (hamstring) - all practiced each day
this week and should be available Sunday. McCadam was inactive
last week but has improved.
PANTHERS
OLB Mike
Caldwell (knee) missed practice for the third straight day on
Friday and will not play Sunday despite being listed as
questionable. Veteran LB Greg Favors fills in again for him
Starting MLB Dan Morgan (hamstring) worked on a full-scale
basis again Friday and will return to the starting lineup.
The Panthers are extremely happy with starting RB Stephen
Davis and actually credit him for their first win of the
season. However, they want to find ways to get second-year RB
DeShaun Foster more involved. The conundrum is how to get him
more involved without taking away from Davis' carries.
By the way, the last time the Panthers beat Atlanta was the
Sunday after former Panther WR Rae Carruth was arrested for
conspiracy for murder.
DETROIT LIONS (1-2) AT DENVER BRONCOS (3-0) 4:15 PM EST
LIONS
With
starting CB Andre' Goodman on Injured Reserve (separated
shoulder), the Lions need to do more juggling in their
already-depleted secondary for Sunday's game at Denver.
Veteran CB Otis Smith will start for Goodman.
Smith had been the nickel back and replaces him in that role
is anyone's guess. The choice comes down to either rookie CB
Rod Babers or veteran CB Alex Molden - both of whom have been
with the team (like Smith) for less than a month.Head coach
Steve Mariucci has said that one of the two now would be
active and non-committal Friday as to which CB would be on the
outside looking in on Sunday.
The Lions also have some question marks in their passing game.
Backup WR Shawn Jefferson (ribs) and starting WR Bill
Schroeder (knee) are both questionable. The duo hobbled
through practice this week and it doesn't sound like either
will be 100% Sunday in Denver.
"Jefferson was very limited in practice this week and he wants
to play and do it," said Mariucci. "We have to make a decision
if we think he's going to be effective or not. (Schroeder)
practiced yesterday and today. He took one day off (Wednesday)
and he's practiced."
WR/KR Eddie Drummond (ankle/knee) is expected to miss
approximately a month and will be replaced on punts by backup
WR Az-Zahir-Hakim. A host of Lions are vying for the kickoff
return job, including rookie RB Avon Cobourne, who has gotten
the closest look in practice this week.
Starting
RG Ray Brown (questionable-chest) was banged up in the loss to
the Vikings but the team expects him to be ready Sunday after
practicing all week.
Starting TE Mikhael Ricks (foot sprain/sore knee) was held out
of practice Wednesday, but returned Thursday and Friday. Ricks
is still sore stemming from offseason surgery and has
struggled on the field, dropping a fair amount of passes.
"He looks almost healthy -- he had an off-season of rehab, he
had a limited training camp and now he's having his training
camp in the first month of the season," said Mariucci. "That's
what happens with guys who miss training camp. You have to
have a few weeks to get your timing, your rust off and your
legs under you. Some of our veteran guys are going through
that a little bit; the guys who missed training camp.
Hopefully he feels healthy and well enough to play well and be
the kind of guy we hope he is. He had a pretty decent week."
Starting QB Joey Harrington (finger) is listed as probable and
will start. However, Harring is not denying that his finger,
which he banged on starting C Dominic Raiola's helmet last
week, isn't still bothering him a bit.
"It's stiff and a little sore but it actually feels a lot
better than it did on Sunday," Harrington said on Friday.
Harrington also said that taping two fingers together doesn't
alter his grip.
"It's taped in a shape that matches the ball and it actually
help brace it and I can use it as leverage in snapping the
ball out of there."
BRONCOS
Starting DT Daryl Gardener (hand-questionable) practiced again
Friday but was limited to the scout team. Gardener suffered a
setback with his hand and is most likely out again this week.
Backup DT Monsanto Pope is slated to start again for Gardener.
Starting RB Clinton Portis (chest-questionable) participated
in the early part of Friday's practice but didn't work in team
drills. Head Mike Shanahan did not say Portis (chest) was
definitely out for Sunday. However, Shanahan has a
long-standing policy that decrees if you don't practice during
the week, you don't play on Sunday. And Portis did not
practice in team drills for the third straight day.
However, Portis and Gardener officially are considered
game-time decisions.
"(Portis will) be a game-time decision, and Gardener will be
the same way," Shanahan said.
Starting FB Mike Anderson (knee-probable) appears to be almost
fully recovered from a knee injury suffered on Monday night
and would start for Portis. Backup RB/FB Reuben Droughns would
start at FB if Anderson were pressed into service at tailback.
Keep in mind that with Denver using many offensive sets,
sometimes the fullback is not a big part of the offensive game
plan. So the team may use three receiver and two-tight end
sets for most of the game if Portis is out.
Starting S Kenoy Kennedy (ankle) participated in Friday's
practice but was downgraded to doubtful. His status is also
considered a game-time decision.
"Kenoy is still a little bit hobbled, but it's amazing to me
how quick that ankle has come around," Shanahan said. "There
is no swelling, which was a good sign, and he was able to cut
today. He's still got a couple of days of recovery time, so
we'll figure out before the game in which direction we'll go."
Backup S Nick Ferguson signed on to be a special teams ace
from the Jets but would start for Kennedy if needed (veteran S
Lee Flowers doesn't return from suspension until next week).
Starting QB Jake Plummer (shoulder-probable) practiced all
week and had no setbacks. He is expected to start vs. the
Lions. Backup CB Willie Middlebrooks also practiced all week
and is expected to be available.
DALLAS COWBOYS (1-1) AT NEW YORK JETS (0-3) 4:15 PM EST
COWBOYS
In a
turnaround from Thursday's workout, head coach Bill Parcells
said that second-year CB Derek Ross (knee-questionable) has
still not shown him enough to play on Friday. Ross did
practice both Thursday and Friday but still seemed a little
tentative.
Despite an impressive game by second-year WR Antonio Bryant
versus the Giants, veteran WR Terry Glenn will continue to
start opposite WR Joey Galloway. However, they plan to use the
three-receiver set very often so Bryant will continue to
rotate with Glenn and will see plenty of playing time.
Starting ORT Ryan Young was added to the injury report with
swelling in his knee but is still slated to start.
JETS
Starting QB Chad Pennington (wrist) and starting CB Donnie
Abraham (shoulder) are out.
With Abraham out, backup CB Ray Mickens takes over as the
starting LCB. Mickens will stay in the slot on third downs
(nickel) with second-year CB Jamie Henderson becoming the LCB.
Backup LB Jason Glenn (ankle-questionable) was downgraded
after failing to practice Friday. On Thursday the Jets listed
Glenn as probable. If Glenn cannot assume his responsibilities
in the nickel defense, backup LB Khary Campbell would take
over.
Starting DE John Abraham (hamstring-probable) was able to
practice with the first-team on Friday and will likely play
this weekend. If Abraham needs a breather or is limited in the
game, second-year DE Bryan Thomas could see more action this
week. Last week, Thomas had a sack and currently is in the
best shape of his professional career.
Starting C Kevin Mawae (knee-probable) did not practice on
Friday. Mawae hurt his knee during Thursday's practice but is
expected to play this weekend.
Starting FS Jon McGraw is not listed on the injury report but
did leave practice early on Friday.
"I think he has a little bit of the flu so I sent him in,"
said head coach Herman Edwards. McGraw should be able to play
this weekend
Starting G Dave Szott returned to practice Friday. The team
had been holding him out to be cautious with his knee but he
is not listed on the injury report.
Starting WR Wayne Chrebet did practice. However, he is not
listed on the injury report and is expected to start Sunday.
KR Michael Bates is expected to play after saying earlier in
the week that he felt a little sore.
P Dan Stryzinski will play this weekend though he took a shot
to the ribs in last week's game against the Patriots.
INDIANAPOLIS COLTS (3-0) AT NEW ORLEANS SAINTS (1-2) 8:35
PM EST
COLTS
Starting RB Edgerrin James (back-questionable) missed his
third straight practice while DE Dwight Freeney (ankle)
practiced for the second straight day. Head coach Tony Dungy
is still saying both will be game-time decisions but James is
less likely to play.
"Dwight actually did pretty well today," said Dungy after
practice. "We're more optimistic on him going. With Edgerrin,
we want to make sure he's 100 percent. I'm a little more
pessimistic on him, but I think they'll both be game-time
decisions."
Since they're playing a Sunday night game and most rosters
have to be set by Sunday prior to the 1:00 PM EST kickoffs,
right now we certainly would not start James he was on our
fantasy team. We'll pass along any definitive news between now
and Sunday regarding James.
Backup RB Ricky Williams ran with the starters Friday,
although no official announcement has been made as to who will
take James' place if he's unavailable.
If James can't play, then backup RBs Dominic Rhodes
(knee-questionable), Williams, and James Mungro will share the
workload.
Dungy indicated that he won't use Rhodes very much so we're
looking for Mungro and Williams to share the larger part of
the load.
"Those guys are fresh and hungry and ready to go," the head
coach said. "If it comes to that, they all bring a little
something different to the table. Dominic is fired up and
itching to play. We'll be fine if it goes that way."
Williams is the better receiver of the two and could increased
time in passing/third down situations while Mungro could see
increased time in short-yardage and goal line situations.
Mungro was solid inside the ten-yard line last season (eight
total rushing TDs).
DE Chad Bratzke backs up Freeney and he'll see significant
action regardless of whether or not Freeney plays.
Starting TE Marcus Pollard returned to the team Friday and is
expected to start on Sunday despite spending the night in a
local hospital with an unspecified illness. Pollard said he
was fine after practice and ready to go.
Starting C Jeff Saturday (back-probable) is expected to play
Sunday despite having back spasms for the last three weeks.
Saturday has missed a few days of practice each week but has
been able to start.
Starting OT Ryan Diem (ankle) is out three-to-four weeks with
a high ankle sprain suffered against Jacksonville last week.
Backup OT Adam Meadows, a former starter, will play in Diem's
RT spot despite a sprained MCL. Meadows practiced all week in
spite of the injury.
Starting CB Walt Harris (knee-probable) has been bothered by
tendonitis in his knee since training camp but is expected to
start on Sunday.
Backup DT Brandon Hicks (knee-probable) is expected to play
despite a sprained knee. Hicks has seen limited work this
week.
Backup WR Brandon Stokley is out for at least another week.
Stokley has missed the first three games with a pulled
hamstring. Backup WR Troy Walters will be the #3 WR again.
SAINTS
Starters CB Dale Carter (eye), OLB Sedrick Hodge (knee). DE
Darren Howard (wrist), and DT Jonathan Sullivan (knee) are all
out. Backup CB Fred Thomas fills in again for Carter; backup
LB Roger Knight (ankle-probable) fills in again for Hodge;
backup DT Kenny Smith fills in again for Sullivan; and backup
DE Willie Whitehead starts again for Howard.
Starting FB Terrelle Smith (knee-probable) practiced and is
expected to start.
Monday
GREEN BAY PACKERS (1-2) AT CHICAGO BEARS (0-2) 9:10 PM EST
PACKERS
Friday was like a Thursday practice due to the extra day.
Green Bay continued its preparations for Monday night's game
in Chicago, but did so without starting WR Robert Ferguson
(knee-probable), who continues to be hampered by a knee
injury. Ferguson originally sprained both his right ankle and
medial collateral ligament in the Packers' September 7 season
opener.
Ferguson played hurt against Detroit but aggravated the knee
injury. He then played hurt against Arizona and aggravated the
knee yet again.
Ferguson has not practiced this week but is expected to take
part in Saturday's workout and be ready to go Monday. Look for
Ferguson and WR Donald Driver to start with Javon Walker and
Antonio Freeman working as the #3 and #4 WRs.
Meanwhile, backup FB Nick Luchey, who broke his thumb in
Wednesday's practice, took part in Friday's workout. Wearing a
bulky protective cast, Luchey even caught a few passes.
However, his status for the game remains questionable. Luchey
has been sidelined since Week One because of a bruised calf.
In other backfield news, backup RB Najeh Davenport (hamstring)
rested during the second portion of Friday's practice but
remains listed as probable. Davenport's injury could pave the
way to a promotion for RB Tony Fisher, who is currently third
on the depth chart. Davenport fumbled twice in the win over
Detroit in Week Two while Fisher caught two passes for 32
yards and ran twice for 13 yards against the Cardinals.
Fisher (groin) practiced Friday and is probable for the game.
Backup TE Wesley Walls, who sat out the Arizona game to give
his strained hamstring some time to recover, is listed as
probable. He has been able to do some work this week and
remains a possibility for Monday. Backup TE David Martin has
seen extra reps in Walls' absence.
Up front, starting OG Marco Rivera (eye-probable), who was
unintentionally poked in the eye against the Cardinals,
practiced again on Friday and is expected to start against the
Bears. Rivera has made 70 consecutive regular-season
appearances in a Packers' uniform.
On defense, starting DT Cletidus Hunt (knee) rested Friday
after taking part in Thursday's practice. Hunt is still
expected to start Monday. Starting S Antuan Edwards (chest)
practiced and should be ready to go for the game as is backup
DL Aaron Kampman (ankle).
BEARS
The Bears' offensive line will likely be one man closer to
full strength Monday night. That's because it appears starting
RG Chris Villarrial (upgraded to probable Friday) will return
weeks earlier than originally expected from a sprained MCL on
his left knee. Villarrial practiced each day this week and
reported no setbacks. He plans to start with the aid of a knee
brace.
While not officially proclaiming Villarrial back in the
lineup, head coach Dick Jauron did say Friday that Steve
Edwards would remain the starter at LG, with backup OL Corbin
Lacina moving to the bench.
Starting OLT Mike Gandy sat out practice Thursday with a sore
knee and was added to the injury report as probable. But Gandy
returned to work Friday and should be fine Monday. Veteran OL
Scott Sanderson took reps in his Gandy's place on Thursday and
is ready in the event of a setback.
Two other Bears appear closer to returning to action as backup
LB Bobbie Howard (pulled right hamstring) practiced Thursday
and Friday. As a result he was upgraded to questionable from
doubtful. Backup S Bobby Gray (knee infection) worked Friday
as well after missing Wednesday and Thursday's sessions.
Gray's return in reassuring to the Bears since he likely would
be the team's only backup safety since rookie Cameron Worrell
(arthroscopic knee surgery) is still a week away and listed as
doubtful. Also, rookie S Todd Johnson (broken jaw) is on
Injured Reserve.
